Who are we?

Irish Universities Nutrition Alliance (IUNA)

The Irish Universities Nutrition Alliance (IUNA) is a formal alliance bringing together the nutrition expertise of University College Cork, University College Dublin, Munster Technological University, Technological University Dublin, Ulster University and Queen's University Belfast. A key focus of the IUNA since its foundation has been the development in the Republic of Ireland of national databases of dietary intake and health status through national nutrition surveys of the population from age 1 to 90 years. These databases are used widely for research related to nutrition, public health and food safety, and support the work of agencies that are responsible for food and nutrition policy and regulation in Ireland and the EU. These surveys have been funded primarily through the Irish Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) competitive research funding programmes.

History

The Irish Universities Nutrition Alliance (IUNA) was founded in the 1990’s as a formal alliance bringing together the nutrition expertise of University College Cork, University College Dublin, Ulster University and Trinity College Dublin. This alliance, led by Professor Mike Gibney (TCD/UCD), Professor Albert Flynn (UCC) and Professor Sean Strain (UU), has facilitated the development of joint programmes of teaching and research in nutrition across the island of Ireland. In recent years the research collaboration has expanded to include investigators from other research institutes, including Munster Technological University (MTU), Technological University Dublin (TUDublin) and Queen’s University Belfast (QUB).
